ScanAI
I’ve recently launched my first app, ScanAI. Using Artificial Intelligence, I developed a document scanner that saves you time by scanning only what you intend to take a picture of instead of cropping pictures. Additionally, extra image storage is never bad 😉. So far, my app has been downloaded internationally with users ranging from Brazil to Thailand. Focus Hackathon
During the past weekend, I participated in a “Focus” hackathon. A “Focus” is essentially a subject in which TKS students decide to take a dive into — think of it as a specialization. My team focused on an intersection between Artificial Intelligence(my focus) and Biology(Metabolomics/Longevity). We created AI.ive, a product that uses biomarkers in pregnant women to provide an early diagnosis for Postpartum Depression (PPD). S/O to my team members(Jessica, Setare, Anastajia) 🤩. Although we had an awesome experience with the hackathon, the real innovation is yet to come as we’re currently working to build out this product.
I had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Kwang Moo Yi, an associate professor in the Computer Department of the University of British Columbia. Due to our mutual interest in Machine Learning, I was able to receive some incredible advice regarding future career plans in the field. Additionally, I learned what it takes to land Artificial Intelligence research opportunities and how to get there. Overall, it was a truly incredible experience which I benefitted from greatly!
Velocity
The month, I joined a program called Velocity. In this program, we have weekly meetings to discuss mindsets and innovative leaders. Additionally, we set goals for ourselves and hustle in order to reach those goals. Finally, we also have daily and weekly updates so that we can hold ourselves accountable and track our progress. Although I’ve only just started, I’ll be sharing more of my experiences in future newsletters.
What I’m Currently Reading
A book that I intend to finish this week is the famously known book “Freakonomics”. Judging from the title alone, I thought I would be learning more about economics. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out what the book really teaches, How to Look at Situations Differently. From how change in abortion laws in America resulted in a drastic decrease in crime to the science of parenting, calling this book an interesting read would be an understatement. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who is curious by nature!
Mindsets
Over the past two months, I’ve had the pleasure of being introduced to a variety of mindsets due to the human accelerator program that I’m in, The Knowledge Society. Although we have experienced many mindsets, I’ll talk about some that I’ve enjoyed the most.
Stoicism
Stoicism is a mindset that intrigued me because when I first read the formal definition, I had no clue what to make of it. However, I have developed my own interpretation of Stoicism; a mindset to overcome detrimental emotions. I’ll add my favourite alternate definition from my father: “The ability to not give a damn”. Normally, I’m the type of person to get irritated by the smallest events that don’t go the way I plan. Sounds awful right? Well, not only was I a pain in the neck for others but I had an awful time too.
That’s when I understood the incredible power that lies in embodying Stoicism. I’m going to be honest, it was hard at first. But practicing this mindset to the point where it became my second nature allowed me to minimize emotions that hold me back. Now, I revel in my successes but most importantly, acknowledge and move on from my failures. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me 🤠.
Anti-Fragility
If I were to pick a mindset that has made me grow the most, I’d probably choose this one. In fact, this mindset is something that I’m still working on to this day. Think of it like this: picture your mindset like a window. When someone says something that you don’t like, imagine pebbles gradually increasing in size being thrown at this window. At some point, this window is going to crack and shatter. The point of Anti-Fragility is to turn that window into steel.
No, that doesn’t mean you cannot respond to what people say. It just means that you stop taking things personally, and start analyzing what has been said to maximize improvement. Instead of sulking about the fact your idea was not used for a project, go learn what made the chosen idea the best choice. Instead of being sad that your team did not win a hackathon, go out and find what you could have done better. Improve, improve, improve.
Appreciation
This mindset is one that many take for granted. In our daily lives, its so easy to get caught up in all the mishaps and frustrations that tend to drive us crazy. We rarely take time out of our days to truly value what we have and how we would feel if those things disappeared. For this reason, I enjoyed this mindset. It also acted as a mood-booster. Whenever I was feeling down, I got to remind myself of what I have. Realizing my situation eliminated most negative emotions and my mood was rejuvenated.
Future Goals
My future goals are to expand my network by meeting more professionals in my field of interest. Specifically, I plan to reach out to professors and CEOs. I also am working on releasing more content, my first video coming out next week, and starting a new Machine Learning project as a part of my focus. Stay tuned for my next newsletter!
